Picture of a woman wearing business attire smiling at the cameraWhat attracted you to the transportation industry?
My first experience with the transportation industry was when I started working with the Mid-Region Council of Governments (MRCOG) in 2004. During this time the New Mexico Rail Runner project was in the beginning stage, which brought a new meaning and excitement to transportation for me. In New Mexico, we drive everywhere, so public transportation is not what we think about first. But through the years I have learned a lot and gained an appreciation for the value of transportation in the local and global economy.

What has been your greatest professional achievement?
Being a part of the New Mexico Rail Runner project from the inception to where it is today, and my contribution from the accounting aspect.

Being detailed-oriented and wanting to the know the “why” of things.

What part of your career story would you like to share with the world?
I enjoy the work I do.

How long have you been working for the company/organization? And what positions have you held prior to your current one?
I have been working with the MRCOG/Rio Metro for over 15 years and have been working in the government sector for over 30 years. I started my career path as an Accountant and am currently in the capacity of Senior Finance Manager.

How does what you do/what the organization does make a positive impact in the community?

What do you think is needed to further attract women to the transportation workforce?
Working to promote women’s visibility and representation in every aspect of the transportation industry through targeted marketing campaigns, industry events and media outreach. The transportation industry is always changing, and with these changes comes new opportunities for women.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to enter this industry?
If you are interested in working for a transportation organization, find out what employment opportunities are available. Consider getting a relevant degree or certification that will enhance your knowledge and skills in that area. Join associations related to transportation. This will help you to connect with mentors and experienced professionals who can provide you with insight, guidance, and potential job opportunities.
