Expanding upon the pedestrian crossing installed at the Downtown Bernalillo Rail Runner Station in 2019, the construction of new trails, fencing and lighting kicked off in August 2022. Totaling over an additional mile, new trail is being extended north to the Sandoval County / US 550 Rail Runner Station and south to Lucero Avenue. At ten feet in width, the trail will accommodate pedestrians and bicycles accessing the Rail Runner, residents traveling to destinations along the Camino del Pueblo corridor, and those looking for some outdoor recreation.
In addition to the trail, a new pedestrian crossing of the rail road tracks is being installed along the popular acequia path near W. D. Carrol Elementary School. The road crossings at Avenida Bernalillo and Lucero have already been reconstructed and now have greatly improved surfaces for vehicles and also pedestrian improvements such as sidewalks, ADA ramps, and safety signage and striping.
Combined with fencing along the corridor and lighting added near crossing and intersections, the project greatly improves safety along the corridor and provides a valuable amenity for residents, visitors, and Rail Runner travelers. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
