Rio Metro will begin the construction of parking and pedestrian improvements at the Los Ranchos / Journal Center Rail Runner Station in early July. The primary purpose of this project is to increase the parking capacity of the Los Ranchos/Journal Center Rail Runner Station, which is one of the most popular park-and-ride based stations.
There are no delays to Rail Runner service anticipated during construction, and access to existing station parking will not be disrupted during the project.
The project is located at the northwest corner of El Pueblo Rd. and the railroad tracks, on the opposite side of the tracks from the existing station. The site includes a one-acre tract, as well as NMDOT-owned land that is part of the Paseo del Norte right-of-way.
Improvements include a 130-space parking lot with lighting, fencing, landscaping and drainage. Security cameras will be installed on the heels of construction to monitor the lot. For the benefit of pedestrians, a six-foot wide sidewalk will be constructed along the north side of El Pueblo Rd. adjoining the parking lot and also through the railroad crossing. Existing railroad gates and lights will be relocated behind that sidewalk for added protection. A new multi-use trail will also connect the parking lot to the existing Paseo del Norte Trail to the north. Additional ADA-accessible parking spaces will also be added to the existing parking lot.
The project was designed by Bohannan-Huston and will be constructed by Star Paving.
The bulk of construction is expected to last 90 days, concluding September 2019. There are no delays to Rail Runner service anticipated.
